Balancing Form, Function, and Acoustic Design.

At Lof, we’ve spent years refining our Wool Hoop lights to strike the perfect balance between form and function. These aren’t just beautiful light fixtures—they’re carefully designed to improve the acoustics of any space, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. One of the core challenges we set out to solve was the common problem of sound reverberation in large spaces. We wanted to create a lighting solution that not only illuminated a room beautifully but also helped manage sound in a way that enhances comfort and functionality. To ensure we were on the right track, we partnered with the brilliant team at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Auckland. Together, we measured and quantified the sound absorption properties of the Wool Hoop to better understand how it could actively improve acoustics. This was the perfect project for our in-house sound enthusiast, Alain Brideson, who was keen to test the sound-dampening potential of our design.

While we won’t overwhelm you with all the technical details (unless, of course, you're a fellow noise nerd—let's talk!), we’re excited to share the results of our tests. The Wool Hoop has proven to be incredibly effective at absorbing sound at key frequencies, making it an excellent choice for spaces where acoustics are crucial.

Key Findings from Our Sound Testing

  • Our largest model, the Wool Hoop 60 Long, absorbs up to 50% of sound energy at certain frequencies—a significant achievement for an interior piece primarily designed for lighting.

  • When grouped in clusters, the Wool Hoop becomes even more powerful. A trio of Wool Hoop 25s absorbs up to 70% of sound energy, creating both a visually striking and acoustically balanced effect.

  • When we tested a combination of the four largest sizes (25, 40, 60, and 60 Long), we saw up to 100% absorption at key frequencies. This makes it ideal for large, open spaces that need help managing sound reverberation.

Why Does Acoustic Design Matter?

The importance of proper acoustic design cannot be overstated. Without effective sound absorption, high-frequency sounds—such as chatter, keyboard clicks, and the general hustle and bustle of everyday life—can cause sharp reflections that make an environment feel overly stimulating. This can lead to discomfort, especially in spaces where conversations need to be clear and the atmosphere should feel calm.

By reducing sound reverberation, the Wool Hoop helps create a more relaxed, balanced environment. Whether in your home, office, bustling hospitality venue, or social space, the Wool Hoop enhances not only the visual appeal of your space but also its acoustics. It ensures a space where you can enjoy clearer conversations and a calm atmosphere—perfect for high-traffic areas or places where people gather.

Wool Hoop: More Than Just Lighting

The Wool Hoop is the result of a thoughtful design process that considers both the immediate aesthetic impact and the longer-term functionality of a space. Our lights not only offer a beautiful, organic design but also actively contribute to a more comfortable living or working environment. By integrating natural materials like wool, we’re also addressing the need for sustainable solutions that reduce noise pollution and enhance the quality of life in our spaces. At Lof, we’re proud to offer a product that is not only sustainable but also purposefully designed to improve the everyday experience of our customers. Whether used in a home, office, or social space, the Wool Hoop is a lighting solution that offers beauty, function, and a significant acoustic benefit.
