“Lof is committed to fair pay for Aotearoa’s growers, eliminating plastic textiles from interiors, and strengthening the local value chain — for healthier people and a more sustainable planet." — Sophie Poelman, Founder & Creative Director, Lof.

Why coarse wool?

Wool is the world's highest-performing natural fibre, fitting perfectly within a circular system. Lof believes in the magic of wool for creating calm, healthy, and environmentally friendly interiors. Wool possesses unique qualities such as noise absorption, air filtration, and fire resistance. It is renewable twice a year, long-lasting, and biodegradable from soil to soil. Wool infuses architectural spaces with softness, elevating hard surfaces and creating welcoming interiors. In New Zealand, coarse wool, also known as 'strong wool', constitutes 80% of the country's wool production. Despite its abundance, it remains seriously underutilised, traditionally confined to products like carpets, coats, blankets, and sweaters. However, we believe coarse wool holds immense potential as a future-focused alternative to plastic textiles, offering benefits for both people and the planet. By harnessing this waste resource, we can contribute to a sustainable future and the well-being of our environment.

Our value chain is situated within the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, adhering to a place-based textile system called a fibreshed. We source wool directly from the farm and process it as locally as possible. Every step of our design considers the product’s environmental and social impact.
